Understanding Giftedness Sessions

Understanding Giftedness Session Descriptions

As a part of Morey’s personalized learning, we are offering interactive sessions about giftedness to 6th graders this spring. The overarching theme is “Understanding Giftedness”. Many of our gifted students do not understand how and why they are considered gifted and what this means for their lives. Although the term “gifted” can carry with it elitist and loaded connotations, we do not want to avoid these discussions to the detriment of our children. We want them to know their rights, but also to understand their complex selves. We believe this series of sessions will help our students more effectively communicate their learner preferences and learning goals. To wrap up this series, students will learn how to respectfully advocate for their social, emotional and academic needs.

Session 1: The first topic in the Understanding Giftedness series focuses on the characteristics and profiles of the gifted. We will work to dispel myths and move away from stereotypes about the gifted. Students will share their current beliefs about what it means to be gifted. Then, they will learn about how giftedness is specific to each individual and think about how their specific traits can be encouraged or modified.

Session 2: After Spring Break, we will move from general characteristics and profiles of the gifted  to how gifted individuals have physiological differences from the rest of the population. Recent research on the gifted brain will be shared with the students at an age appropriate level of detail. Then, we will talk about how these differences may manifest themselves as asynchrony or overexcitabilities. The lesson objective will focus on personal understanding and envisioning how these differences may affect the perceptions of the people around them.

Session 3: Following the physiological differences session, we will go more in depth with how giftedness can modify personal identity and social belonging. We will compare how the ease of learning and lack of challenge may affect self perception. As this goes hand in hand with academic fit in the classroom, we will discuss how these experiences may have affected student attitudes. While some students feel they fit in easily in school, other students feel the pressure to conform at the risk of shunning their abilities.

Session 4: The social effects of being gifted can bring about some emotional effects. Therefore, we will skim the topics of perfectionism, anxiety and existential depression. Many students are not affected by these feelings. Nonetheless, they can be aware of how to be empathetic to their classmates or family members who may be affected in these ways. These seeds will also be planted to help students cope with life as they may feel these emotional effects later in life.

Session 5: As gifted individuals differ, so do their academic programming needs. We will talk about the various programming options available at Morey. In this way, students can consider which options are most beneficial to them. Do they like to delve in deep with one topic or do they like to move quickly discovering the next concepts out there? Awareness of programming options can help students think about how they can choose individualized goals and products.

Session 6: This series about giftedness will culminate with the students considering how to advocate for their needs. Increased self awareness will help them write academic goals that are personally significant and allow them to think more about their learning preferences. Sometimes, gifted students know their needs, but are not sure how to communicate them respectfully. So, students will spend some time role-playing a few scenarios to help them improve their self-advocating skills.
